Access to Technology: Verizon Innovative Learning Schools Equips Students with Technology and Skills for Success.

Verizon Innovative Learning Schools

Millions of students nationwide lack access to the technology and skills needed for success. That’s why Verizon Innovative Learning, launched in 2012 through long-time nonprofit partner Digital Promise, equips teachers and students at select schools with free technology devices and internet access.

The program also offers classrooms with a dedicated Innovation Lab to learn using emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR), coding and 3D printing.

Access to Technology

Since 2012, Verizon Innovative Learning — an education initiative that addresses barriers to digital inclusion and is a key program under Citizen Verizon, the company’s responsible business plan for economic, environmental and social advancement — has provided over 3M students with access to digital skills training. In addition to providing free technology and internet access for students, the program also equips teachers with new teaching tools that transform the way they teach and help them build a future-ready workforce.

Teachers like LaFaille use technology to engage their students, including guiding them through hands-on projects that create sustainable building materials from mycelium, the roots of fungi. These projects, along with a next-gen technology-infused curriculum, are helping kids get the education they deserve.

Additionally, Verizon Innovative Learning schools offer mobile hotspots with data plans for students without reliable home internet access and on-demand professional development opportunities that are aligned to Digital Promise micro-credentials. This allows families to be part of their child’s educational experience, which research shows leads to improved student outcomes.

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning engages students in a way that sparks their imagination and interests, often taking them outside of the classroom to work with experts or community groups. This approach to education also strengthens students’ social and emotional skills.

Through a partnership with Digital Promise, Verizon Innovative Learning provides free technology, internet access and innovative STEM learning programs to under-resource schools. Students at participating Title I schools are connected all the time, so they can learn from anywhere and stay engaged with their coursework.

As part of its Digital Inclusion Commitment, Ciena is partnering with Verizon Innovative Learning to bolster remote learning at two Title I schools by providing devices and connectivity. The company will also support teacher training and professional development through the program. In a new campaign, four students share candid stories about how their experiences with Verizon Innovative Learning have shaped their education and future plans. The spots are being featured on broadcast TV and other digital channels.

Innovation Labs

Verizon Innovative Learning is a comprehensive initiative that offers schools free technology, internet access and project-based STEM curricula. In collaboration with educational partners and nonprofit Digital Promise, the program empowers students to become leaders in our digital economy.

Each school is equipped with new tools and technologies – virtual reality equipment, 3D printing stations and augmented reality apps – to give students access to emerging technology. These dynamic labs help students not only learn about the tech that will power our future, but also create solutions to solve real-world challenges.

Ciena is supporting the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program with a commitment to expand remote learning for under-resourced students at two schools. The partnership provides devices, mobile hotspots and data plans for students without reliable home internet connections, as well as on-demand professional development opportunities and STEM infused curriculum to empower teachers to effectively leverage the technology for student learning. The program is part of Citizen Verizon, Verizon’s responsible business plan for economic, environmental and social advancement by using leading-edge technology to drive change in communities.

Hotspot Model

Despite having access to in-classroom technology, many students lack a reliable internet connection at home. The Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, in partnership with Digital Promise, equips students and teachers at selected Title 1 middle and high schools with mobile hotspots and monthly data plans, empowering them to learn 24/7 in and out of the classroom.

The program also provides teacher training resources, such as the Teacher Training Pathways and STEM Activity Center, which are available on the free education portal Verizon Innovative Learning HQ. This includes a collection of tech-driven, ready-to-teach lesson plans that feature augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) apps.

To help students who face barriers to digital inclusion, Verizon will donate Orbic Speed mobile hotspots with 30GB per month of data access to 20,000 NYC Department of Education students. This support is facilitated through a grant from The Fund for Public Schools as part of Citizen Verizon, the company’s global commitment to social impact.
